In the past, the network has already appeared information about fraudulent schemes, under which attackers changed the iPhone with unoriginal parts to new smartphones. However, some managed to hand over fake devices to Apple. In particular, one of the citizens of China was able to earn several hundred thousand dollars.
According to The Washington Post, for quite a long period of time, Chinese citizen Cuan Jiang, who currently lives in Oregon, imported fake iPhones from Hong Kong. He regularly received small parcels with 20-30 machines. As a result, in almost two years Jiang purchased about 3,000 non-original iPhones.
Then the enterprising citizen of China under false names appealed to Apple with complaints that his smartphone stopped turning on and asked to replace it under warranty. In two years, the Coopertinos have granted about 1,500 such requests. All new devices Jiang transported to China, where they resold for 600 dollars.
It is noteworthy that in mid-2017 Apple suspected fraud, and the company’s lawyer sent a letter in which he demanded to stop illegal actions. However, Jiang continued to change the fake iPhones to new ones. The decisive factor in the whole scheme was that Apple employees did not check the devices too carefully, as they were not included.
Jiang has now pleaded guilty and now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine.
