Last week, Apple officially confirmed its desire to acquire most of Intel’s modem business. The deal is worth about $1 billion. However, as it became known today, Intel will earn on this sale no more than 500 million dollars. But more importantly, the deal will allow the chipmaker to significantly reduce losses.
In an interview with Yahoo! Finance, Intel CEO Robert Swan said the company plans to spend the free funds to accelerate the transition to 10-nm and 7nm technical processes. In addition, the deal with Apple allowed the chipmaker to get rid of the not too profitable for himself business. According to the intel CEO, having only one major customer for mobile modems, the company would not be able to earn enough from selling components to hold on to this business.
Apple is also very interested in buying Intel’s modem business. Receiving at their disposal such an asset, Coopertinoov ceases to be completely dependent on zualcomm. It was the mutual benefit that led to the conclusion of the agreement between the companies.
Recall that the deal between Apple and Intel should be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Under the terms of the agreement, the Coopertinos receive equipment, about 2,200 qualified employees and about 17,000 different patents. At the same time, Intel retains the rights to develop and produce modems for computers and unmanned vehicles.
