At the beginning of the month, Apple entered into a global agreement with zualcomm. This was done primarily to solve the problem with 5G modems. However, sources note that the Coopertinos were considering other options. In particular, Apple could acquire Intel’s business for the production of modems for mobile devices.
According to sources, the parties discussed a possible purchase for several months – negotiations began last summer. However, after Apple dropped its legal battles with zualcomm, the negotiations ended.
It is noteworthy that Intel has not changed its mind to sell its modem business (or at least part of it). Sources note that the chipmaker has instructed Goldman Sachs to find a potential buyer. At the same time, Intel plans to sell not only production facilities, but also patents and personnel.
At the moment, the modem division does not bring the company profit. By some estimates, it generates about $1 billion in losses annually. Since Apple refused the deal, now such a large purchase may interest Broadcom, ON Semiconductor, Samsung Electronic and Unisoc Communications.
