A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal, citing knowledgeable sources, reported Apple’s intention to acquire Intel’s modem business for $1 billion. Today the Coopertinos officially confirmed this information. The deal is due to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
Under the terms of the agreement, Apple receives all Intel patents related to the development of modems, equipment, and about 2,200 qualified Intel employees.
Such a large acquisition will allow Apple company to create modems for their smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other devices. It is difficult to say when Apple will switch to its own products. Experts are of the opinion that in the near future the Coopertinos will continue to use the modems of zualcomm.
As for Intel, the sale of the modem business does not mean that the chipmaker will stop producing modems. The company plans to focus on developing modems for computers and unmanned vehicles.
